Hadith-1

Fasting is obligatory in the month of Ramadan

عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا، جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ثَائِرَ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي مَا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَلَىَّ مِنَ الصِّيَامِ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ، إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ شَيْئًا ‏”‏‏

Talha bin ‘Ubaid-UlIãh narrated:

A bedouin with unkempt hair came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “0 Allah’s Messenger! Inform me what Allah has made compulsory for me as regards fasting.” He replied, “You have to keep fast during the whole month of Ramadan, unless you want to fast more as Nawafil.” (Bukhari:1891)

Hadith:2

Fasting is a shield

عَن أبِيى هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم‏ ‏ الصِّيَامُ جُنَّة۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: Fasting is a shield or protection (from the fire and from committing sins.) (Bukhari:1904)

Hadith:3

Reward for Fasting

عن أبِيى هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم‏ ‏ قَالَ اللَّهُ كُلُّ عَمَلِ ابْنِ آدَمَ لَهُ إِلاَّ الصِّيَامَ، فَإِنَّهُ لِي، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ‏‏۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, ‘All the deeds of Adam’s sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it. (Bukhari:1904)

Hadith:4

Controlling the tongue and desire while fasting

عَن أبِيى هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: وَ إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ صَوْمِ أَحَدِكُمْ، فَلاَ يَرْفُثْ وَلاَ يَصْخَبْ، فَإِنْ سَابَّهُ أَحَدٌ، أَوْ قَاتَلَهُ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي امْرُؤٌ صَائِمٌ‏.‏

Abu Huraira narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: If one of you is fasting, he should avoid obscene speeches and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, ‘I am fasting.’ (Bukhari:1904)

Hadith:5

Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ مَنْ لَمْ يَدَعْ قَوْلَ الزُّورِ وَالْعَمَلَ بِهِ فَلَيْسَ لِلَّهِ حَاجَةٌ فِي أَنْ يَدَعَ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَه۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)” (Bukhari:1903)

Hadith:6

Smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person

عَن أبِيى هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَخُلُوفُ فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْك۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: By Him in Whose Hands my soul is; The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Bukhari:1904)

Hadith:7

Two pleasures for the fasting person

عَن أبِيى هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: لِلصَّائِمِ فَرْحَتَانِ يَفْرَحُهُمَا إِذَا أَفْطَرَ فَرِحَ، وَإِذَا لَقِيَ رَبَّهُ فَرِحَ بِصَوْمِهِ ‏۔


Abu Huraira narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.(Bukhari:1904)

Hadith:8

Ar-Raiyan is for those who observe fasts

عَنْ سَهْلٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ‏: إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ بَابًا يُقَالُ لَهُ الرَّيَّانُ، يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ الصَّائِمُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، لاَ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُهُمْ يُقَالُ أَيْنَ الصَّائِمُونَ فَيَقُومُونَ، لاَ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُهُمْ، فَإِذَا دَخَلُوا أُغْلِقَ، فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ مِنْهُ أَحَدٌ۔

Sahl narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to observe fasts?’ They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it.” (Bukhari:1896)

Hadith:9

The gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed

عَن أَبي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم‏:‏ إِذَا دَخَلَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ فُتِّحَتْ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ، وَغُلِّقَتْ أَبْوَابُ جَهَنَّمَ، وَسُلْسِلَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ‏۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.” (Bukhari:1899)

Hadith:10

All the Previous sins will be forgiven

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: قَالَ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ ‏‏‏۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari:1901)

Hadith:11

Generosity and Quran recitation during Ramadan

أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَجْوَدَ النَّاسِ بِالْخَيْرِ، وَكَانَ أَجْوَدُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي رَمَضَانَ، حِينَ يَلْقَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ، وَكَانَ جِبْرِيلُ ـ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ ـ يَلْقَاهُ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ فِي رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى يَنْسَلِخَ، يَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْقُرْآنَ، فَإِذَا لَقِيَهُ جِبْرِيلُ ـ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ ـ كَانَ أَجْوَدَ بِالْخَيْرِ مِنَ الرِّيحِ الْمُرْسَلَةِ‏۔

Ibn `Abbas narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel visited him, and Gabriel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the Holy Qur’an to Gabriel, and when Gabriel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and welfare). (Bukhari:1902)

Hadith:12

Suhur has blessing in it

:عَن أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِي السَّحُورِ بَرَكَةً ‏۔

Anas bin Malik narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Take Suhur as there is a blessing in it.” (Bukhari:1923)

Hadith:13

Eating and drinking forgetfully

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ :‏ إِذَا نَسِيَ فَأَكَلَ وَشَرِبَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّمَا أَطْعَمَهُ اللَّهُ وَسَقَاهُ ‏۔

Abu Huraira narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah.” (Bukhari:1933)

Hadith:14

Fasting or not Fasting during journeys

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّ حَمْزَةَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الأَسْلَمِيَّ قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَأَصُومُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَكَانَ كَثِيرَ الصِّيَامِ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَصُمْ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَفْطِرْ” ‏۔

Aisha narrated:

Hamza bin `Amr Al-Aslami asked the Prophet, “Should I fast while traveling?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “You may fast if you wish, and you may not fast if you wish. (Bukhari:1943)

Hadith:15

Hastening to do Iftar

عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: ‏لاَ يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ ‏۔

Sahl bin Sa`d narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.” (Bukhari:1956)

Hadith:16

Dua at the time of Iftar

عَن ابْن عُمَر قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَفْطَرَ قَالَ: ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ الله ‏۔

Ibn Umar said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said when he broke his fast: “Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allah wills.” (Abu Dawud:2357)

Hadith:17

What is recommended to break the fast with

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: ‏مَنْ وَجَدَ تَمْرًا فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَيْهِ وَمَنْ لاَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى مَاءٍ فَإِنَّ الْمَاءَ طَهُورٌ ‏۔

Anas bin Malik narrated:

The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever has dried dates, then let him break the fast with that, and whoever does not, then let him break the fast with water, for indeed water is purifying.” (Tirmidhi:694)

Hadith:18

If a fasting person is invited to eat

عَن أبِي هريرة عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ:‏ إِذَا دُعِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى طَعَامٍ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ ‏۔

Abu Huraira reported:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: If any one of you is invited to a meal when he is fasting, he should say:” I am fasting.” (Muslim:1150)

Hadith:19

Seeking laylatul Qadr

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ – رضى الله عنها – قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ‏۔

A’isha reported:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Look for Lailat-ul-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.” (Muslim:1169)

Hadith:20

Standing in Laylatul Qadr

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ ‏۔

Abu Hurairah narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: Whoever stands (in the night prayer) on the Night of Al-Qadr out of faith and seeking a reward (from Allah), he will be forgiven what preceded of his sins.” (Bukhari:1901)
