Ruling on combining intention of Shwwal and Qadha fast

Question:

Is it permissible to combine intention of Shawwal and qadhaa fast?

Answer:

There is difference of opinions regarding combining the intentions of obligatory and optional acts.

If one makes intention of both; fardh and nafal on something, then Imam Abu Yusuf said it will be counted as fardh and the nafl will be void. Imam Muhammad said it will neither be counted as fardh nor nafal. (Al Ashbah Wan Nazair, Ibn Naujaym)

Therefore it is best to keep the fardh fasts (qadha fasts) separately.

However it is permitted if one makes up the missed fasts of Ramadhan in the month of Shawwal and hopes for the rewards of Shawwal fasts aswell provided that the intention of fasting is to make up the missed fasts of Ramadhan.

Although it is better to make up the missed fasts of Ramadhan first then keep the fasts of Shawwal in order to gain the special reward; equivalent to fasting the whole year.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

“He who observed the fast of Ramadhan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal, it would be as if he fasted the whole year” (Muslim-1164)
