Ruling on interest money received from the bank

Question:

Is it permissible to give interest money received from the bank to poor relatives?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

First of all, it is totally haram for a Muslim to have any kind of dealings with interest. Money kept in saving accounts where bank pays interest should be avoided. One should only use current accounts where the bank pays no interest.

Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) said that “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said: They are all equal.” (Muslim-1598)

Interest that already received from the bank should be given to the poor who are entitled to receive zakat without the intention of receiving reward. One may give it to their poor relatives if they are entitled to receive zakat.
