Forty Hadith on Knowledge


بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم


Hadith – 1

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ۔

Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.

Hadith – 2

مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا سَهَّلَ اللهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ۔

Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.

Hadith – 3

مَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوتِ اللهِ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَيَتَدَارَسُونَهُ بَيْنَهُمْ إِلاَّ نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّكِينَةُ وَغَشِيَتْهُمُ الرَّحْمَةُ وَحَفَّتْهُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَذَكَرَهُمُ اللهُ فِيمَنْ عِنْدَهُ۔

People do not gather in the houses of Allah, reciting the book of Allah and studying it together, but that tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will cover them, angels will surround them, and Allah will mention them to those near him.

Hadith – 4

إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَتَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ۔

Verily, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge.

Reference: Sunan Abu Dawud 3641


Hadith – 5

مَنْ يُرِدْ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ۔

If Allah intends goodness for someone, he gives him understanding of the religion.

Reference: Bukhari 71


Hadith – 6

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ۔

The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.

Reference: Bukhari 4739


Hadith – 7

 نَضَّرَ اللهُ امْرَأً سَمِعَ مَقَالَتِي فَوَعَاهَا وَحَفِظَهَا وَبَلَّغَهَا۔

May Allah brighten the face of a person who hears a saying of mine, so he understands it, remembers it, and conveys it.

Hadith – 8

مَنْ خَرَجَ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ كَانَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ۔

Whoever goes out seeking knowledge is in the way of Allah until he returns.

Hadith – 9

أَلَا إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا مَلْعُونَةٌ مَلْعُونٌ مَا فِيهَا إِلَّا ذِكْرَ اللهِ وَمَا وَالَاهُ وَعَالِمٌ أَوْ مُتَعَلِّمٌ۔

Indeed the world is cursed and everything in it except the remembrance of Allah and that which Allah loves, and the scholar or the student.

Hadith – 10

لاَ تَعَلَّمُوا الْعِلْمَ لِتُبَاهُوا بِهِ الْعُلَمَاءَ وَلاَ لِتُمَارُوا بِهِ السُّفَهَاءَ۔

Do not seek knowledge in order to show off in front of the scholars, or to argue with the foolish.

Hadith – 11

مَنْ طَلَبَ الْعِلْمَ لِيُجَارِيَ بِهِ الْعُلَمَاءَ أَوْ لِيُمَارِيَ بِهِ السُّفَهَاءَ أَوْ يَصْرِفَ بِهِ وُجُوهَ النَّاسِ إِلَيْهِ أَدْخَلَهُ اللهُ النَّارَ۔

Whoever seeks knowledge to contend with the scholars, to argue with the foolish, or to attract the attention of people, Allah will admit him into Hellfire.

Hadith – 12

مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ عِلْمًا مِمَّا يُبْتَغَى بِهِ وَجْهُ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَا يَتَعَلَّمُهُ إِلَّا لِيُصِيبَ بِهِ عَرَضًا مِنْ الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَجِدْ عَرْفَ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ۔

Whoever acquires (Islamic) knowledge, which is (normally) acquired to gain the pleasure of Allah, but he acquires it only to get some worldly benefit, he will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.

Hadith – 13

إِنَّمَا شِفَاءُ الْعِيِّ السُّؤَالُ۔

Verily, the only cure for ignorance is to ask questions.

Reference: Sunan Abu Dawud 336


Hadith – 14

الكلِمَةُ الْحِكْمَةُ ضَالَّةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَحَيْثُ وَجَدَهَا فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا۔

The word of wisdom is the lost property of the believer. Wherever he finds it, he is most deserving of it.

Hadith – 15

مَنْ طَلَبَ الْعِلْمَ كَانَ كَفَّارَةً لِمَا مَضَى۔

If anyone seeks knowledge, it will be an expiation for past sins.

Hadith – 16

تَعَلَّمُوا الْفَرَائِضَ وَالْقُرْآنَ وَعَلِّمُوا النَّاسَ فَإِنِّي مَقْبُوضٌ۔

Learn the things which are made obligatory and the Qur’an, and teach them to people, for I will be taken away.

Hadith – 17

مَنْ جَاءَهُ الْمَوْتُ وَهُوَ يَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ لِيُحْيِيَ بِهِ الْإِسْلَامَ فَبَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ
النَّبِيِّينَ دَرَجَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ۔

If death comes to anyone when he is seeking knowledge with the purpose of using it to revive Islam, there will be only one degree between him and the Prophets in paradise.

Hadith – 18


أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِمَجْلِسَيْنِ فِي مَسْجِدِهِ فَقَالَ: «كِلَاهُمَا عَلَى خَيْرٍ وَأَحَدُهُمَا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ أَمَّا هَؤُلَاءِ فَيَدْعُونَ اللهَ وَيَرْغَبُونَ إِلَيْهِ فَإِنْ شَاءَ أَعْطَاهُمْ وَإِنْ شَاءَ مَنَعَهُمْ، وَأَمَّا هَؤُلَاءِ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ الْفِقْهَ أَوِ الْعِلْمَ وَيُعَلِّمُونَ الْجَاهِلَ فَهُمْ أَفْضَلُ وَإِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ مُعَلِّمًا» ثمَّ جلس فيهم۔

The Messenger of Allah () came up on two gatherings in his masjid. He said “Both of them are engaged in something that is good, but one of them is superior to the other. These ones are praying to Allah and have placed hope in Him, if He wills, He may answer their prayers, if He wills, He may refuse them. Those ones are learning fiqh or knowledge and teaching the ignorant, so they are superior. I was sent only as a teacher.” He then sat down among them.

Hadith – 19

 مَن حَفِظَ عَلَى أُمَّتِي أَرْبَعِينَ حَدِيثًا فِي أَمْرِ دِينِهَا بَعَثَهُ اللهُ فَقِيهًا وَكُنْتُ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَة شافعا وشهيدا۔

If anyone preserves for my people forty hadith concerning their religion, Allah Almighty will raise him up in the next world as a faqeeh (Islamic jurist), and I shall be an intercessor and witness for him on the day of resurrection.

Hadith – 20

مَنْهُومَانِ لَا يَشْبَعَانِ: مَنْهُومٌ فِي الْعِلْمِ لَا يَشْبَعُ مِنْهُ وَمَنْهُومٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَا يَشْبَعُ مِنْهَا۔

Two greedy ones never attain satisfaction: he who is greedy for knowledge can never get enough of it, and he who is greedy for worldly goods can never get enough of them.

Hadith – 21

سَيَأْتِيكُمْ أَقْوَامٌ يَطْلُبُونَ الْعِلْمَ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمْ فَقُولُوا لَهُمْ مَرْحَبًا مَرْحَبًا بِوَصِيَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَاقْنُوهُم۔

People will come to you seeking knowledge. When you see them say to them, ‘Welcome, welcome,’ in obedience to the command of the Messenger of Allah () and teach them knowledge.

   Hadith – 22

أَفَلاَ يَغْدُو أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَيُعَلِّمَ أَوْ يَقْرَأَ آيَتَيْنِ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ نَاقَتَيْنِ وَثَلاَثٌ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ ثَلاَثٍ وَأَرْبَعٌ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ وَمِنْ أَعْدَادِهِنَّ مِنَ الإِبِلِ ۔

Does not one of you go out in the morning to the mosque and teach or recite two verses from the Book of Allah the Majestic and Glorious? That is better for him than two she-camels, and three verses are better (than three she-camels). and four verses are better for him than four (she-camels), and to on their number in camels.

Hadith – 23

مَنْ طَلَبَ الْعِلْمَ فَأَدْرَكَهُ كَانَ لَهُ كِفْلَانِ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يُدْرِكْهُ كَانَ لَهُ كفل من الْأجر۔

He who seeks knowledge and attains it will have a double portion of reward, but if he does not attain it he will have a single portion of reward.

Hadith – 24

أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ الْمَرْءُ الْمُسْلِمُ عِلْمًا ثُمَّ يُعَلِّمَهُ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ۔

The best of charity is when a Muslim man gains knowledge, then he teaches it to his Muslim brother.

Hadith – 25

يَحْمِلُ هَذَا الْعِلْمَ مِنْ كُلِّ خَلَفٍ عُدُولُهُ يَنْفُونَ عَنْهُ تَحْرِيفَ الْغَالِينَ وَانْتِحَالَ الْمُبْطِلِينَ وَتَأْوِيلَ الْجَاهِلين۔

In every successive century those who are reliable authorities will preserve this knowledge, rejecting the changes made by extremists, the false claim of the liars, and the interpretations of the ignorant.

Hadith – 26

الْعَالِمُ وَالْمُتَعَلِّمُ شَرِيكَانِ فِي الأَجْرِ وَلاَ خَيْرَ فِي سَائِرِ النَّاسِ۔

The scholar and the seeker of knowledge will share the reward, and there is no good in the rest of the people.

Hadith – 27

عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذَا الْعِلْمِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُقْبَضَ وَقَبْضُهُ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ۔

You must acquire this knowledge before it is taken away, and its taking away means that it will be lifted up.

Hadith – 28

إِنَّ اللهَ لاَ يَقْبِضُ الْعِلْمَ انْتِزَاعًا، يَنْتَزِعُهُ مِنَ الْعِبَادِ، وَلَكِنْ يَقْبِضُ الْعِلْمَ بِقَبْضِ الْعُلَمَاءِ، حَتَّى إِذَا لَمْ يُبْقِ عَالِمًا، اتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ رُءُوسًا جُهَّالاً فَسُئِلُوا، فَأَفْتَوْا بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ، فَضَلُّوا وَأَضَلُّوا۔

Allah does not take away the knowledge, by taking it away from (the hearts of) the people, but takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when none of the (religious learned men) remains, people will take as their leaders ignorant persons who when consulted will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray.

Hadith – 29

إِذَا مَاتَ الْإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ إِلَّا مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ۔

When the human being dies, his deeds end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.

Hadith – 30

إِنَّ الْعَالِمَ لَيَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَالْحِيتَانُ فِي جَوْفِ الْمَاءِ۔

The inhabitants of the heavens and earth, even the fish in the depths of the water, seek forgiveness for the scholar.

Hadith – 31

فَضْلُ الْعَالِمِ عَلَى الْعَابِدِ كَفَضْلِي عَلَى أَدْنَاكُمْ۔

The superiority of the scholar over the worshiper is like my superiority over the least of you.

Reference: Sunan Tirmidhi 2685


Hadith – 32

إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلاَئِكَتَهُ وَأَهْلَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ حَتَّى النَّمْلَةَ فِي جُحْرِهَا وَحَتَّى الْحُوتَ لَيُصَلُّونَ عَلَى مُعَلِّمِ النَّاسِ الْخَيْرَ۔

Indeed Allah, His Angels, the inhabitants of the heavens and the earths even the ant in his hole, even the fish send blessings upon the one who teaches the people to do good.

Hadith – 33

فَضْلُ الْعَالِمِ عَلَى الْعَابِدِ كَفَضْلِ الْقَمَرِ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ عَلَى سَائِرِ الْكَوَاكِبِ۔

The superiority of the learned man over the worshipper is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars.

Hadith – 34

إِنَّ الْعُلَمَاءَ وَرَثَةُ الأَنْبِيَاءِ وَإِنَّ الأَنْبِيَاءَ لَمْ يُوَرِّثُوا دِينَارًا وَلاَ دِرْهَمًا وَرَّثُوا الْعِلْمَ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ أَخَذَ بِحَظٍّ وَافِرٍ۔

The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.

Hadith – 35

 ‏ فَقِيهٌ وَاحِدٌ أَشَدُّ عَلَى الشَّيْطَانِ مِنْ أَلْفِ عَابِد۔

One faqeeh (Islamic jurist) is more severe against the Shaitan than one thousand devoted worshippers.

Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah 222


Hadith – 36

بَلِّغُوا عَنِّي وَلَوْ آيَةً۔

Convey (my teachings) to the people even if only a verse.

Reference: Bukhari 3461


Hadith – 37

 رُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أَوْعَى مِنْ سَامِعٍ۔

Perhaps the one it is conveyed to is more understanding than the one who heard it.

Reference: Sunan Tirmidhi 2657


Hadith – 38

مَثَلُ عِلْمٍ لَا يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ كَمَثَلِ كَنْزٍ لَا يُنْفَقُ مِنْهُ فِي سَبِيل الله۔

Knowledge from which no benefit is derived is like a treasure from which nothing is expended in the path of Allah.

Hadith – 39

سَلُوا اللهَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ۔

Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge in Allah from knowledge without benefit.

Reference: Sunan Ibn Maajah 3843


Hadith – 40

 اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا۔

O Allah, benefit me with that which You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge.

Reference: Sunan Tirmidhi 3599


Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah  be pleased with him) said:

تَدَارُسُ الْعِلْمِ سَاعَةً مِنَ اللَّيْلِ خَيْرٌ من إحيائها۔

Studying together for an hour during the night is better than spending the whole night in devotions.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ مَنْ عَلِمَ شَيْئًا فَلْيَقُلْ بِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَعْلَمْ فَلْيَقُلِ اللهُ أعلم فَإِن من الْعلم أَن يَقُول لِمَا لَا تَعْلَمُ اللهُ أَعْلَمُ۔

If any of you people knows anything he should make it known, but if anyone does not know he should say that Allah knows best, for saying this when one does not know is a part of knowledge.

Reference: Bukhari 4809


Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

إِنَّ هَذَا الْعِلْمَ دِينٌ فَانْظُرُوا عَمَّنْ تَأْخُذُونَ دِينَكُمْ۔

This knowledge is a religion, so consider from whom you receive your religion.

Reference: Muslim 26


Yahya bin Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

لاَ يُسْتَطَاعُ الْعِلْمُ بِرَاحَةِ الْجِسْمِ۔

Knowledge cannot be acquired with laziness.

Reference: Muslim 612
