Ruling on participating in activities which can be harmful to one’s body or health

Question:

Is it permissible to raise funds for charity by participating in activities which can be harmful to one’s body or health? E.g running in the snow or severe cold weather.

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

It is not permissible for a Muslim to engage himself in anything which leads to the risk of illness or injury in any way or form.

Therefore, if the activity involves any harm to oneself or others, this would not be permissible. It will be permissible only on the condition that it does not involve any harm.

Allah Almighty says: “Do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own hands” (Surah Baqarah 195)

Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Ibn Majah 2341)
