Ruling on health insurance

In Holland we have basic health insurance which is compulsory upon the public, it covers basic healthcare like the GP, in some cases physiotherapy, nutritionist and the hospital. If for example I need physiotherapy which is not covered in the basic insurance I can take an extra package where it is covered and other things as well. Without the extra package it can be expensive. The dentist is not covered either in the basic insurance. Some treatments are very expensive so that’s why they have a separate package for dental care too. So will it be permissible for me to purchase the extra package?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Generally insurance is forbidden in islam. Insurance is based on gambling and interest which are clearly forbidden. However, if law of the land makes it compulsory to have insurance, such as car insurance in the UK, without which one cannot drive a car, or even when one will be in obvious and unbearable hardships if the insurance is not taken, such as medical insurance in some countries; when the cost of medical care is so high in some countries that it is very difficult for ordinary people to pay for their treatment without having medical insurance. In such cases some ulama have permitted to have medical insurance due to the necessity.

Therefore if you can’t afford the cost of your necessary medical treatment and there’s no alternatives, then it would be permissible for you to take the insurance with the extra package.
